March 2009: Thornhill, Eastern Cape
In March 2009 Jeffrey's Bay optometrists Chantelle Raubenheimer and Leané Cilliers participated in their first clinic under the Reach4Sight banner, at the Nomzamo Madikisela Mandela School in Thornhill in the Eastern Cape.

It started out with difficult testing conditions because a retinoscope battery died on them and there was a huge language barrier since most of the children spoke only Xhosa while the optometrists' grasp of the language was rudimentary at best.

The two optometrists examined 35 learners between Grades R and 8 who had been identified by the teachers. Four pairs of spectacles were prescribed and one learner was referred to the Provincial Hospital to see an ophthalmologist. Frames were sponsored by Ethix Eyewear and lenses by Basic Optical Laboratories.
