Without sponsorship, free clinics for underprivileged communities are not possible. Ethix Eyewear has generously donated frames for 13 clinics in the Kalahari, for which Hoya Hill Optics also donated the cost of the lenses and fitting. Hoya Hill also sponsored all the lenses for clinics in Namaqualand in 2011. Optic Trade Links and Carl Zeiss have supplied spectacle cases, and Welch Allyn donated a rechargeable lithium ion handle for a retinoscope.

Basic Optical Laboratories sponsored lenses and fitting for three clinics in Elim and the Richtersveld Community Conservancy. They also give Reach4Sight a preferential rate on lenses for other clinics. Mining company Trans Hex sponsored the cost of frames, lenses and fuel for four clinics at Sanddrif, Kuboes, Lekkersing and Eksteenfontein in the Richtersveld Community Conservancy and the Anglican Catholic Church MDSA has sponsored two clinics in the Free State.

Optometrist Keith Reid has invested R295 000 in modern equipment in order to run these clinics, and a further R25 000 in frames, lenses and auxiliary equipment. In order for Reach4Sight’s clinics to be sustainable, more sponsorship is needed, particularly in the form of:

  • lenses and fitting
  • frames
  • sunglasses for people living with pterygiums (lesions on the cornea) in dry, bright and windy areas like the Kalahari and Richtersveld
  • a vehicle (e.g. bakkie) on loan for the weeks of the clinics
  • fuel costs to allow the optometrist to reach out-of-the-way communities (for instance, the distance between Cape Town and the Kalahari means a return trip of 2 400 kilometres – an expensive undertaking, especially as fuel prices continue to rocket)
  • accommodation for the optometrist while in the field
  • cash donations to help pay for the clinics.

If you or your company are prepared to help, please contact Keith Reid, email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it   or cell +27 (0)83 251 3039. The more sponsorship Reach4Sight gets, the more underprivileged communities it can help.
